A homeless man has been arrested after he allegedly pushed a transgender woman onto the subway tracks in Greenwich Village earlier this week, Reuters reports.. Police said Saturday he had been charged with second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime.
Police identified the man as 32-year-old Rolan Reid. When they made the arrest at the Canal Street station on Saturday, he threatened them, “I’m going to throw you guys onto the tracks,”.
Later, Reid was taken to a hospital for psychological evaluation, police said. He also reportedly made statements to police incriminating himself.
The 28-year-old transgender woman said she was standing on a platform at the train station when Reid allegedly yelled at her, “What are you looking at” before pushing her onto the tracks. Her attacker fled, and another rider helped her back up onto the platform.
She was treated and released from the hospital after the attack.
