Twin suicide bombs by Nigerian Boko Haram in Cameroon

Two bombs planted by suspected Boko Haram militants in Fotokol, a northern town in Cameroon, went off killing at least 15 people on Sunday. The first explosion went off inside a bar near a Cameroon special forces camp just after sundown as people were breaking the Ramadan fast. The second explosion followed as soldiers approached the bar. According to Colonel Didier Badjeck, military spokesman, three Chadian soldiers were among those killed.

Meet the Cameroon king with 100 wives

Abumbi II, the 11th fon, or king, of Bafut, Cameroon, has close to 100 wives. They weren’t all his to start with. According to local tradition, when a fon dies, his successor inherits all his wives and then marries his own queens. He inherited 72 of the women from his late father. He has also taken on over 500 children from all of his wives.

“The queens have a great role to play in the kondom,” notes Prince Nickson, also of Bafut, noting that it is up to these women behind the man to shape him in his kingly role.

“Behind every successful man must be a very successful, staunch woman,” says Abumbi’s third wife, Queen Constance.

“Our tradition has it that when you are king, the elderly wives remain to hand down the tradition to the younger wives, and also to teach the king the tradition because the king had been a prince, not a king.”

Despite the fact that polygamy is legal in Cameroon, the data shows that there are far fewer polygamous marriages across the African continent. The practice is being challenged by changing values, the spread of the Christian faith, the growing appeal of the western way of life but also the rising costs of having large families. It is against this backdrop that Cameroon’s traditional rulers must walk the fine line between two often conflicting cultures.

“During colonialism other values came in, of governance, different from the traditional values we had and therefore there is this constant conflict between the traditional values and modern western values,” admits Fon Abumbi II, who has ruled Bafut, the largest fondom in the region, for 47 years.

“My role is to blend them, to find the way forward so my subjects can enjoy the fruits of development and modernity without destroying their culture. Without a culture, you are not a human being, you are an animal. And therefore the chieftaincy institution is the guarantor of our culture.”

“I understand that we might be quick to judge the lifestyle of the kings, but just like in the United Kingdom, African kingdoms and kings are bound to a rich culture and history. (Practices) like inheritance of all your father’s wives is nothing but a moral obligation.”

On meeting the queens of Fon Ndofua Zofia II of Babungo — one of Cameroon’s youngest traditional rulers — Methu CNN correspondent said:

“All his young wives, forced on him by tradition, spoke fluent English in a French-speaking region and were great marketers.”

It is this seeming contradiction that makes life in the fondom fascinating and confusing. Are they stuck in the past or keeping pace with the present? Fon Zofoa III doesn’t think you have to choose. He may have “inherited” 72 wives and more than 500 children after his father’s death, but he considers himself a very modern king.

“To run a kingdom nowadays in this era, you must be educated because things are moving very fast. Like they used to say, education is light, ignorance is darkness.”

US government pledges $5bn to the Multinational Joint Task Force fight against Boko Haram

 

US donates $5bn to the fight against Boko Haram

The United States has announced a $5 billion contribution to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in order to boost military operations against Boko Haram insurgency. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US assistant secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, announced this at a news briefing via telephone from the African Union Summit on Monday.

 The money will go towards the Multi Joint Task Force, a military team drawn from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger, with the sole responsibility of fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the Lake Chad region.

Making the pledge known at the AU Summit in South Africa today June 15th, the US Assistant Secretary of Bureau of African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the US govt is currently in talks with President Buhari on how best they can support the fight against insurgency in the region

“We are having discussions with President Buhari on how we might bolster our support. We have already been working with them and providing information. We are also providing some equipment and support and we have a number of meetings with the countries who are members of the Multinational Joint Task Force to look at other areas we might support. We are working closely with the Lake Chad Basin countries: Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon to address the issues of Boko Haram,” she said

“At the same time, we’ve just announced at the venue of the AU, a five billion dollar contribution to the Multinational Task Force. We are also providing some equipment and support and we have a number of meetings with the countries who are members of the Multinational Joint Task Force to look at other areas we might support.” Thomas-Greenfield said that Africa had faced “some really horrendous terrorist attacks” over the past two years, citing the West Gate and Garissa University attacks in Kenya and Boko Haram attacks, particularly the kidnapping of the Chibok girls, in Borno state.

“While I would not say Africa is under siege, Africa has some major security challenges that require a very strong and very concerted strategic effort by African countries and partners to address the security concerns of Africa,” she continued.

“The United States is providing a strong support to AU on security, as it has a strong partnership with Africa on security. We are working closely with the Lake Chad Basin countries: Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon to address the issue of Boko Haram.” She said America had so far trained some 250,000 African peacekeepers, and expressed its highest commitment to security on the continent. The US envoy also used the opportunity to express support for the warrant of arrest issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir.

“The United States frowns at plans by some African leaders to subvert the constitution to extend their terms in office. US only supports two-term limit in office,” she said. Thomas-Greenfield’s announcement is the second of such hefty donation to MNJTF in three days. On Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the release of $21 million (out of the $100 million pledged by Nigeria) to the regional task force.
