KWWL’s article: Police investigate facebook post offering 4 year old for adoption

Police were called to the home of a Dubuque, Iowa family after a member posted on Facebook, “Does anyone know a family who would like to adopt a 4 year old girl?” 

A family in Dubuque, Iowa was reportedly investigated by police recently after a member of the clan, whose name has been withheld in the local news story, wrote a post on Facebook that offered up their 4-year-old for adoption.

“I need some help,” began her note, posted over the weekend to the private, 4,000-member DBQ Mamas group in Dubuque and re-published Monday.

“Does anyone know a family who would like to adopt a 4 year old girl. My parents adopted her but got new jobs and they have no time for her. I have 3 kids of my own and can not handle another. Serious inquiries only.“

Dubuque Police Lt. Scott Baxter said his department got “several calls” about the post and dispatched an officer to investigate.

“We determined no criminal act had been committed and there was not sufficient probable cause to warrant an arrest or charge,” Baxter said. “The welfare of the 4-year-old was checked and determined satisfactory. To my knowledge, the 4-year-old remained with the adopted parents referenced by the person who made the post.”

Baxter adds that the police department notified the Department of Human Services about the post on Facebook. “Obviously the post was not well thought out, as so many aren’t on social media,” he says.

In a later post (removed by DBQ Mamas administrators, as was the original note, after law enforcement got involved), the woman appeared to backpedal on her intent to re-home the preschooler via social media.

“Let me rephrase,” she wrote,“I’m not selling a kid, it was to help find adoption ideas. So calling the police to receive suggestions was ridiculous. She’s safe and fine. So thank you for your help.”

But upset about the incident has yet to die down.

Hundreds of commenters forwarded and posted notes in response to KWWL’s article about the incident on Facebook, where remarks ran from outrage to pity, for everyone involved.

“Children are not objects you get then discard when you just don’t have the time,” fumed one commenter.

“YOU BE A RESPONSIBLE ADULT AND MAKE TIME.” Another commenter joined others urging critics to reserve their judgment. “While it’s extremely sad that someone is giving up a child maybe they are trying to give the child a better life, maybe that’s the absolute best thing that they can do.”

It’s not clear in this case whether or not re-homing, the process of moving an adopted child to another home, was at play. And it is something that’s “not common, thank goodness,” Adam Pertman, President of the National Center on Adoption and Permanency said.

“But it does happen, and it usually happens because a parent doesn’t know what else to do. It’s not jettisoning a kid because they didn’t do their homework. It’s that something awful is happening and the parents don’t know where to turn. Typically it’s after they’ve tried everything and just want to help the child get parented properly.”

Hope Holland is seen being embraced by her 18-year-old son Jonathan after spending 15 years apart.

A California woman is crediting a Facebook photo with reuniting her with her kidnapped son, 15 years after she says he was taken by his father to Mexico.

On Wednesday, Hope Holland wrapped her arms around her now 18-year-old son, Jonathan, for the first time since he was 3 years old. “Happy,” the South Bay mother managed to choke out while summing up her feelings to reporters with tears pouring out of her eyes.

The extremely emotional moment followed approximately five months of back-and-forth communication with the couple after she stumbled upon an astonishingly familiar photo on Facebook, showing a pair of boys in a bath tub.

‘I had no reason to believe I was finding my son. Ever since I found him, my whole world, my whole outlook and direction changed,’ said Holland.

Jonathan was taken by his father, with whom Hope shared custody, in 2000.

‘His dad was going on vacation in Mexico and had permission to take him. It was a normal day. I didn’t think he was not coming back,’ Hope said. He never came back with Jonathan.

It was a photo she had taken years ago. It was Jonathan and his older brother Jacob.

“At first, my body responded with panic and excitement. Heart palpitations and sweat…my breathing out of control,” she wrote on a GoFundMe page that recounts her incredible journey in finding him. She admitted that up until that moment she had friended a number of people named Jonathan online who matched his description, so she knew not to get too excited.

But when she clicked on the connecting profile’s name, her little boy, all grown up, was seen staring back at her.

“I scrolled through picture after picture, crying. It was like flashes of little movie trailers, giving me insight to pieces of his life,” she wrote.

After messaging him with the help of a friend, Holland and her long-lost son spoke for 80 minutes on the phone the first time she called him.

She credits her four years of high school Spanish as the “only reason I was able to talk to my son… thank God!”

Jonathan said that he had no memory of his mother while growing up, but had always wondered if she was out there and thinking of him. That’s why he had posted the photo of him as a child.

“I am happy he wanted to know me,” she said. Because of Jonathan’s age, Holland said federal authorities declined to provide further assistance in bringing him back to her.

Thanks to funds raised online through Gofundme, however, she was finally able to fly him back to her this week.

Jonathan still has a good relationship with his father and so plans to return to Mexico to finish his final year of high school this fall. Once he graduates he plans to return to the U.S. and be with his mom.

What do you do when you find out your 13 year old daughter is posing as a 19 year old on Facebook? You go upholster on her. This woman publicly shamed her daughter on Facebook after discovering she was posing as a 19-year-old and posting racy pics on Facebook. The woman disgraced the girl on the streets of Denver, Colorado and posted the video on her daughter’s Facebook page.

In the video posted, the mother told the girl’s Facebook friends that she had been lying about her age, that she wasn’t old enough to be posting pics of herself in lingerie and wearing make up.

You’re 13. So why does your Facebook page say that you’re 19? Are you 19?” the mother asked the girl.

The crying girl replied “No.”

Then the mum said “Don’t cry now. You wasn’t crying when you was posting pictures on Facebook, was you? You still have a bedtime, right? You still watch the Disney Channel!”

She then tells the crying girl that she’s been denied access to the internet, access to TV and no time to spend with her friends.

The angry mum then addressed the men flirting with the girl on Facebook. She said: “She’s a kid and she’s going to stay a kid. And as long as she’s under my roof, she’s going to do what I say.”

The 5 minutes video has been viewed more than 11 million times since it was posted to Facebook.
