7 Prison Workers Charged in El chapo guzman escape, Mexican authorities announced a $3.8 million reward

Seven are charged in ‘El Chapo’ escape

Investigators trying to determine if guards’ response time aided drug lord’s escape. Seven people who worked in the maximum-security prison that held Joaquin ‘El Chapo Guzman‘ have been charged in connection with his escape.

Mexico’s attorney general said Friday in a statement that the prison workers will be jailed in the state of Guanajuato and the investigation continues.

Also Friday, Mexico’s interior minister said that on the night Guzman escaped, it took 18 minutes for guards to arrive at his cell after they lost sight of him on surveillance video.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the guards’ response time contributed to his July 11
escape from the facility west of Mexico City.

“That is part of what the attorney general’s office is looking at — if the protocols were fulfilled in the correct times,” Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said at a news conference.

Guzman, Mexico’s most notorious drug lord, slipped through a hole under the shower in his cell and escaped through a mile-long tunnel to freedom, authorities said.

‘El Chapo’ escape shines spotlight on corruption in Mexico

Guzman’s cell was videotaped 24 hours a day. But the surveillance had two blind spots for privacy — the toilet and the shower.

Closed-circuit video from July 11 shows him going to the shower fully clothed twice and bending down behind a wall. After the second time, he never resurfaced in the cell.

It’s likely prison workers helped Guzman break out, the interior minister said this week. Osorio Chong said he has already fired the prison director and other prison officials.

Mexican authorities announced a $3.8 million reward for information leading to Guzman’s capture.

Nicknamed “Shorty” for his height, Guzman already had pulled off one elaborate escape from a maximum-security prison. In 2001, he managed to break free while reportedly hiding in a laundry cart. It took authorities 13 years to catch him — closing in as he was sleeping at a Mexican beach resort.

Notorious drug lord Joaquin “ El Chapo ” Guzman escape caught on CCTV

CCTV pictures of the moment notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman escaped from his prison cell have been released by Mexican authorities.

Mexico’s National Security have released video footage of billionaire Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s prison cell just minutes before his grand escape.

Guzman is seen in the video walking back and forth in his cell and sitting on his bed before heading to an area near his shower. There, he forced open a 50cm-by-50cm grill in the shower floor, and climbed down a 32ft shaft into the complex tunnel system that his henchmen had spent the last year digging underneath the feet of the prison guards

According to Mexico’s National Security commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido, prior to Guzman’s escape, his behavior appeared to be natural of an inmate who spends long hours in a cell.

The cells do, however, have two blind spots from the camera, to allow for privacy in the bathroom and in the shower. Guzman reportedly used an opening in the shower to begin his elaborate escape on Saturday night.

In contrast to the clean-shaven photo of Guzman that Mexican officials released this weekend in what was said to be a recent picture, Guzman appears to have a full head of hair which is consistent with pictures where he is pictured drinking and flying on an airplane in what his sons claim to be photos taken this weekend.

Meanwhile, the director of the maximum-security prison where Guzman staged his elaborate escape last Saturday has been fired. The announcement comes on the same day that photographs emerged of Guzman appearing to taunt authorities with his new-found freedom by drinking beer and flying in an
airplane.

The photos were sent to a blog which monitors the on-going drug war in Mexico by one of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s sons, and were allegedly taken after his audacious escape just two days ago.

If verified, the pictures would be the first of the notorious cartel leader to surface since his prison break on Saturday morning from Altiplano jail. It also follows his Twitter threats to presidential candidate Donald Trump warning him to stop his anti-Mexico rhetoric.

Officials are offering a reward up to 60million pesos (about $3.8million) for information leading up to the capture of Guzman, Mexico’s attorney general said.

Baffled: Authorities look into the entrance to a secret tunnel through which Guzman is believed to had fled

This is the hole through which Mexico’s most notorious drug lord escaped from a maximum security prison for the second time – using it to flee through an elaborate network of tunnels underneath his cell.

Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, billionaire head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, made his jail break on Saturday morning and is on the run from Altiplano jail, 50 miles outside of Mexico City, security officials said.

His audacious escape saw him dash through the mile-long tunnel system, which led to a building under construction next to the prison – from where he collected clothes left for him by his conspirators.

The sophisticated tunnel contained air vents, electric lights, emergency oxygen tanks – and even a motorbike on rails to speed his escape, according to Mexico’s National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido.

Top Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has escaped from a maximum security prison for the second time, security officials announced yesterday. Guzman, who headed the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was last seen in the area of the showers in the Altiplano prison outside of Mexico CityThe National Security Commission said in a statement that Guzman went to the showers shortly before 9 p.m. and wasn’t seen for a while. Upon checking his cell, authorities found that it was empty.

A search operation began immediately in the surrounding area and highways. Flights have also been suspended at Toluca airport near the penitentiary.

Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman was captured in February 2014 after more than a decade on the run. He faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the U.S. and was on the DEA’s most-wanted list.

Guzman had been caught previously in Guatemala in 1993, extradited and sentenced to 20 years in prison in Mexico for murder and drug trafficking. He escaped from another maximum security prison, Puente Grande in western Jalisco state, in 2001 with the help of prison guards.

The Sinaloa Cartel empire stretches throughout North America and reaches as far away as Europe and Australia. The cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war that has torn through parts of Mexico for the last several years.

Sinaloa is believed now to control most of the major crossing points for drugs at the U.S. border with Mexico.
