How sad? ISIS sells women and girls into sexual slavery for "as little as a pack of cigarettes"

The United Nations envoy on sexual violence detailed Monday how Islamic State militants are selling teenage girls into sexual slavery and inflicting horrific sexual violence on female abductees.

Zainab Bangura met with women and girls in April who had escaped from areas controlled by the insurgent group, and this week talked about what she had heard.

She explained how large groups of abducted girls were kept in cramped conditions, subjected to abuse and assigned monetary value by a group of militants before being sold. In one case, a 15-year-old girl was sold off to an IS leader in his 50’s who taunted her desire to commit suicide before raping her.

In some cases, teenage girls were sold in IS militant slave markets for “as little as a pack of cigarettes,” said Bangura. The group continues to run this slave trade as they abduct more women and girls in the territory they take over, she explained.

Bangura’s accounts are the latest in IS’ well-documented history of abhorrent sexual violence against women. A Human Rights Watch report released in April documented systematic rape and forced marriage of Yazidi minority women. Women and girls who escape also face continuing trauma from their experiences, and largely lack the psychosocial support required.

Yazidi religious leader Baba Sheikh has issued repeated calls for acceptance and reintegration of survivors of IS abuse, something that Bangura praised on Monday.

The UN has repeatedly condemned the use of sexual violence by ISIS, with Bangura stating last month that the group has “institutionalized sexual violence and the brutalization of women as a central aspect of their ideology and operations, using it as a tactic of terrorism to advance their key strategic objectives.”

The group uses abducted women to attract young male foreign fighters who make up a significant portion of its forces, according to analysts. IS has also issued commandments and pamphlets on the proper protocol for slavery under its interpretation of Islamic Law.

Bangura stated that the exact number of women and girls enslaved by IS militants is not currently known.

Court temporarily blocks release of "Angola 3" inmate

A federal appeals court has temporarily blocked the release of Albert Woodfox, the last of the Louisiana inmates dubbed the Angola 3 by supporters protesting their long stints in solitary confinement. Tuesday’s order came a day after a U.S. district judge said Woodfox should be released immediately and that the state cannot try him again for the killing of a prison guard.

His two previous convictions were overturned. Woodfox has long maintained his innocence in that death in 1972, when inmates were protesting conditions inside the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell is appealing the judge’s order, saying Woodfox is a killer who should remain locked up.

The appeals court order blocks the release of Woodfox until at least Friday.

Woodfox and Herman Wallace were accused in the 1972 killing of guard Brent Miller at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. A third inmate, Robert King, was linked to Miller’s death but never charged.

The group became known as the “Angola 3,” and the case has been a cause celebre for years, with activists arguing there is no evidence tying the three men to the crime and decrying the decades they each spent in solitary confinement.

Woodfox — who was originally imprisoned on an armed robbery conviction has said he had tried to point out injustices at the prison, including instances of segregation, corruption and rape, and was targeted and wrongfully accused because of his activism as a Black Panther.

King was freed after his conviction in the killing of a fellow inmate was overturned in 2001.

The same went for Herman Wallace, who was released in 2013 after a judge vacated his murder conviction and sentence. He only experienced a few days of freedom; he was suffering from terminal liver cancer and died just days later.

A federal appeals court overturned Woodfox’s conviction last year. But he has remained behind bars and is awaiting a third trial.

This woman in her 30’s who divorced her husband 12 years ago will now be marrying the father of the man she divorced.

Though the ex-husband who says he is disgusted said he suspected the two were at it while he was still married to her, but never knew it would ever come to this. His ex-wife however told him to his face that the earlier he gets used to her being his stepmom, the better for him.

A 36-year-old wife who walked out on her husband after just eight months is now marrying his 74-year-old father. Liza Goddard, of Grimsby, divorced Jason Harwood, 35, in 2003, after a short-lived marriage which broke down in less than one year.

But she is now set to become her ex-husband’s stepmother after becoming engaged to Jason’s father John, who is nearly 40 years her senior.

Jason had become suspicious of his father and his wife after the trio lived together in the pensioner’s bedsit in Slough, Berkshire.

But Jason only found out about the secret affair after he visited his father to congratulate him on the news of his engagement. His father then revealed that his fiancée was his son’s ex-wife.

Unemployed Jason told how, ten minutes later, Ms Goddard waltzed into his father’s home in Grimbsy and said: ‘You’d better get used to the idea of me being your stepmum.’

He told The Sun: ‘She is going from my ex-wife to my stepmum. What they are doing is wrong.’

Jason had married Ms Goddard in 2000, after the pair met at a youth club.

But, straight away, the couple moved into Jason’s father’s bedsit in an attempt to save money. They even spent their wedding night with John in a sleeping bag next to their bed.

Jason suspected that his father and Ms Goddard were ‘at it’ at that time.

He told how, on one occasion, he went to buy his wife a McDonald’s milkshake but returned to the property to check which flavour she wanted.

He claims that he then saw Liza in bed with no knickers on while his father was sat in a nearby chair with his flies undone.

When the trio moved to another property in Grimsby shortly afterwards, he got fed up and kicked his father out.

Liza left soon afterwards, before they finally got divorced in 2003.

Following the engagement, John updated his Facebook status to read: ‘Engaged to Liza Goddard.’

Meanwhile, Jason’s mother Sharon, 54, who had three children with her ex-husband, said she was ‘absolutely disgusted’.
