Dylann Roof"s sister tried to raise money for canceled wedding

 

Dylann Roof, 21 year old racist who allegedly killed 9 people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina? Well, his older sister Amber Roof, 27, who was due to wed on June 21st called off her wedding after her brother allegedly murdered those 9 church goers.

She was due to wed her fiancée U.S. Army Reserve Recruiter Michael Tyo at The Mitchell House and Gardens in Lexington on June 21, just 4 days after the atrocity in Charleston, South Carolina.

She was very upset that she had to cancel her wedding so she went on GoFundMe asking for donations to help her pay some of the wedding costs and send her on a dream honeymoon.

The page attributed to the couple called ‘A Fresh Start for Michael and Amber’ went live 5 days ago in which she asked for $5,000 to help recoup ‘lost wedding costs, to pay bills, and to send us on our dream honeymoon’. She Said she would give 10 per cent of donations to the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

On the page, Roof reiterated the purpose of canceling the wedding in the first place.

“We canceled our wedding to protect our family and mourning the lives of those lost,” she wrote. “Many friends and family members came into town and took time off of work to be there for us. We could not ask you to do that again.”

“Our wedding day was suppose to be the most important and special day of our lives,” she wrote on the website. “It was suppose to start our lives together with our new family. Our day was the exact opposite.”

Over 30 donors contributed to the GoFundMe before it was abruptly taken down, with amounts ranging from $9 to $200.

Some donors left messages expressing sorrow and sympathy for the couple.

“I too have a selfish brother that has ruined a few of my special days” wrote a donor under the name of Megan P. “A situation like this could have easily been me since my brother has threatened to kill my father on several occasions.”

But she removed it yesterday after the page had raised $1,604 after a barrage of criticism which called it insensitive and offensive.

One angry woman, Melissa Williams-Stewart, wrote on the page before it was taken down: ‘I’m sorry but it is insane to me that you have the nerve to ask people to donate for a honeymoon.

Another person said: ‘Look I’m sorry your brother screwed up your wedding plans, however I’m way more concerned about the people who lost there (six) loved ones.’

Another person sent in a donation with the message: ‘Here’s $9 for the Nine Victims.’

Hate crime: White gunman fatally shoots nine people at historic black church in South Carolina

According to the church’s website, Emanuel AME Church — often referred to as ‘Mother Emanuel’ — is the oldest AME church in the south and has one of the largest black congregations south of Baltimore, Maryland.

A gunman remained at large Thursday morning after nine peoplewere shot and killed in Charleston, South Carolina, during a Bible study session at one of the nation’s oldest and most prominent African-American churches, authorities said.

The church played an important role in the state’s history, including the slavery era and the Civil Rights movement.

“This is a hate crime,” Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said early Thursday near the scene at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Among the victims was the church’s pastor, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, 42, a Democratic member of the state Senate, two sources told NBC News.

Mullen described the suspect as a slender 21-year-old white man with sandy blond hair, wearing a gray sweatshirt or hoodie, jeans and Timberland boots. A reward will be offered later Thursday, he said.

At least six ambulances were seen in the area of the shooting.

Mullen said information was slow to develop because there was a report that “there might have been a secondary explosive device in the scene.” That threat was over, he said, offering no further details.

“This is the most unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy,” Mayor Joe Riley Jr. said early Thursday, saying the gunman had to be a “hate-filled person.”

Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said the shooting occurred about 9 p.m. ET. The Rev. Norvel Goff, presiding elder of the Edisto District of the state conference of the AME Church, said a prayer vigil would be held at noon Thursday.

Known as “Mother Emanuel,” the church is the oldest AME church in the South, having been founded in 1816 under the leadership of abolitionist minister Morris Brown, the second bishop of the AME Church in the U.S. The Gothic Revival-style church is on the National Register of Historic Places.

“I’m just absolutely sick to my stomach right now. It’s horrible,” Lisa Phipps, who works across the street as a caterer, told NBC News.

“I just can’t believe this is happening in my community,” Phipps said. “That’s a very active church. … Their influence is wonderful. They do so much for the community.

“I can’t imagine a human being doing something like this,” she said.

The Rev. Thomas Dixon, a pastor with the activist group People United to Take Back Our Community, that a Bible study session likely would have been in progress, as is common in the African-American church “on any given Wednesday night.”
