Eric Garner’s family will continue pushing for civil rights charges despite a $5.9-million settlement with New York City.

New York City has reached a settlement with the family of Eric Garner, who died after being put in a choke-hold by police last July, agreeing to pay $5.9 million to resolve the claim over his death. The family had filed a $75million lawsuit against the city but accepted a pretrial settlement on Monday.

His death sparked protests around the country by people outraged over police treatment of African Americans. Cell phone video of the fatal encounter showed Garner saying ‘I can’t breath’ 11 times while being held on the ground by an NYPD officer in a chokehold. He was being apprehended for allegedly illegally selling cigarettes when he died. The family say the settlement is not victory!
