No fewer than 78 persons were killed after a gas station they ran to for shelter during heavy downpour went up in flames in Acrra, Ghana yesterday June 3rd. According to Ghana’s Fire Service spokesperson, Billy Anagate, the fire started at the Neoplan Bus station at about 5.00pm and then quickly spread to the Goil gas station, causing an explosion which killed all the people taking refuge there. Bodies of the victims are still being evacuated from the scene of the incident.

Flood that resulted from the heavy downpour submerged some buildings and vehicles causing people to take refuge in the gas station. Most buildings that had caught fire from the explosion burned away into the night as ‘floodwater around the site hindered recovery attempts. Some of the photos are very graphic. Please be warned. *Extremely graphic and heartbreaking* If you have the heart, continue…

First photo of the woman who wrote the codes that took humanity to the Moon

Here’s the woman who wrote the codes that took humanity to the Moon. The things you’ll never find in some history books. The first person to reach the moon was celebrated, not the person who made it a reality, behind the scenes. Her name is Margaret Hamilton, a software engineer. And she wrote those codes reportedly by hand.

Father stabs his wife and two daughters to death, then self after Googling depression & wow to slit human throats

A father has stabbed his wife and two daughters to death after researching how to cut someone’s throat – then lived with their bodies for a weekend before hanging himself, an inquest has heard.

The bodies of Jitendra Lad, 49, his wife, Dukshaben Lad, 44, and their daughters, Trisha, 19, and Nisha, 16, were discovered at their home in Clayton, Bradford, last October – days after celebrating Diwali as a family.

Mr Lad was found hanged and the three other members of the ‘model’ family had all been stabbed in their beds with a knife, in what a coroner described as a ‘scene of unimaginable horror’.

Bradford Coroner’s Court heard that Mrs Lad, also known as Daksha, and her two daughters were probably killed in the early hours of Saturday October 25.

But Mr Lad was seen by a number of people later the same weekend and probably killed himself on the Monday afternoon, two days later, the court heard.

The hearing was told how Mr Lad had no medical history of mental illness and relatives and friends said they appeared to be a normal, loving family.

But Detective Sergeant Duncan Jackson told the hearing in Bradford how Mr Lad had accessed the internet on his phone in the weeks before his death to research depression and, just days before the tragedy, he searched ‘how to cut someone’s throat and executions’.

The hearing also heard that Mr Lad had been stressed at work as an IT manager, and was concerned he had been overpromoted.

Det Sgt Jackson however told the court about an incident in Ibiza in August 2014 when the family was on holiday.

He said a woman, Lee Cartwright, told officers about a conversation she had with Mr Lad by a swimming pool in which he said he ‘disliked his current job and wanted to do something better’.

She said he went on to say how he was ‘dreading turning 50′, said he did not like Bradford and wanted to live abroad but had a duty of care to his mother.

According to the police officer, ‘Mrs Cartwright was left with the impression Jitendra was unhappy with his life’.

"Forget about being "Likable" says Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Forget about being Likable: Award winning author and renowned feminist thinker Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a speech  at the 2015 Girls Write Now awards ceremony about the pitfalls of pursuing likability. Women are taught from a young age to be inoffensive, Adichie explains, which can ultimately stunt our growth as human beings, preventing us from leading fully self-actualized lives.

She said:

I think that what our society teaches young girls, and I think it’s also something that’s quite difficult for even older women and self-professed feminists to shrug off, is that idea that likability is an essential part of you, of the space you occupy in the world, that you’re supposed to twist yourself into shapes to make yourself likable, that you’re supposed to hold back sometimes, pull back, don’t quite say, don’t be too pushy, because you have to be likable.

And I say that’s bullshit.

So what I want to say to young girls is forget about likability. If you start thinking about being likable you are not going to tell your story honestly, because you are going to be so concerned with not offending, and that’s going to ruin your story.

Anger over Caitlyn/Bruce Jenner being chosen over Lauren Hill for ESPY courage award

Caitlyn JennerPathetic—-No Hero here. When it was announced that Caitlyn Jenner was to be honored at next month’s ESPY’s with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, Bruce Jenner excitedly wrote on Twitter ‘What the hell am I going to wear?

But now some are crying foul over ESPN’s decision to choose Jenner, 65, instead of Mount St. Joseph basketball player Lauren Hill, who courageously battled brain cancer while staying on the university team. The 19-year-old lost her fight against cancer on April 10.

Several fans took to twitter to vent their frustration.

But Hill wasn’t the only overlooked candidate people were made about. Iraq veteran Noah Galloway, who lost most of an arm and a leg fighting, but still competes in extreme sports and almost won this season’s “Dancing With the Stars,” also had hundreds of tweets from fans irate over Jenner’s choice.

ESPN would only say of their decision-making process that “many people are discussed every year,” and that “there is no such thing as a runner-up.”

They also provided a written statement which said Jenner was chosen “to help move forward a constructive dialogue about progress and acceptance.”
